Swans played a friendly game away at Andover last Saturday, and after a brilliant start they fell away to a bigger and heavier pack.
After some early exchanges, a scrum on the halfway line had Swans passing the ball all along the three-quarters for winger Conrad Phillips, to score in the corner after eight minutes. Steve Woolley converted. Two minutes later a powerful kick ahead by Steve Woolley had Phillips outpacing the Andover defence to score close to the posts. Woolley added the extras(0pts – 14pts).Swans continued to dominate and after 30 minutes another fine move had centre Harry Spyers forcing his way over for Swans third try. Andover replied after 36 minutes, with a push over try by their forwards, but just before half time Matt Roberts, Swans flank forward outpaced the home defence to score under the posts. Woolley added the conversion for Swans to lead by 5pts – 26 at the interval.
Swans made several changes at half time, which proved disastrous. Swans could not get into the opposition’s 22 for twenty minutes with the heavier Andover pack dominating in such a way that Andover ran in three tries taking the score to 22pts – 26pts after 65 minutes. At last Swans got into the Andover 22 and flank forward Conor McCaffery powered over the line. Woolley added the extras(22pts – 33pts) after 70 minutes.
An interception try by Andover reduced the arrears, and in the last 5 minutes poor tackling and lack of fitness told on Swans, such that a couple of more tries were scored by Andover to give the home side victory by 41pts – 33pts.
