SWANAGE & WAREHAM RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB LTD.
TROWBRIDGE 17pts SWANAGE & WAREHAM 18pts
Swanage & Wareham took on their closest rivals in Southern Counties league, with this trip to Trowbridge last weekend, and in a very close encounter just managed the victory.
As expected both teams set out for victory, but a series of penalty kicks, which were not in range for goal attempts, to both sides restricted the play somewhat. However after 22 minutes Trowbridge missed with one attempt. Swans fought their way down to the Trowbridge end and gained a line out on the 5 metre line. A typical Swans catch/drive resulted with Swans hooker Robert Elford powering over the whitewash. Phil Graves added the extras (0 – 7 after 28 minutes). Five minutes later a penalty to the hosts reduced the lead, but just before the interval Trowbridge winger Lewis Jordan weaved his way through the Swans defence to score under the posts. This was converted making the score 10pts – 7pts at the break.
Swans started the second half on the attack, putting Trowbridge on the back foot, and the pressure told for after 48 minutes another catch/drive move had Swans flanker Matt Roberts coming in to score.(10pts – 12pts). Four minutes later Swans increased their lead with centre David Elford converting a penalty in the absence of Phil Graves, who had to go off injured.(10pts – 15pts). Trowbridge were not finished, and in the middle part of the half put Swans under severe pressure, but Swans dogged defence kept them out. However the pressure ultimately told as Trowbridge scored a converted try after 69 minutes to give them the lead again at 17pts – 15 pts. In the last hectic ten minutes as both sides went for the win, once again David Elford kicked a penalty goal after 77 minute to put Swans ahead again. In the final minute Swans were penalised in their own 22 with a penalty, and as all hush fell on the crowd, with the final kick of the match the ball skimmed just outside of the left upright giving Swans the victory, by just one point.

Prior to the 1st XV game there was a game between Trowbridge Colts against Swanage & Wareham Colts, giving the crowd chance to observe the future stars of the two clubs. It was a fast and furious encounter, but defences held sway and unfortunately too many whistles for unforced errors. After 12 minutes Trowbridge took the lead with a penalty goal, but Swans replied with a score of their own as Steve Woolley landed one after 20 minutes. That was the half time score 3pts each.
It was much the same story in the second half with both teams their hardest, but the defences were dominant. However after 58 minutes Trowbridge put pressure on Swans line and forced their way over for a try, which was converted giving the hosts a 10pts – 3pts lead. Try as they might Swans could not manage to score and in the end had to concede to that scoreline.
