SWANAGE & WAREHAM 34pts BLANDFORD 5pts
Swanage &Wareham welcomed Blandford to Bestwall last Saturday, and after a tense first half, Swans comfortably came up with their first league win of the season.
In the first minute Swans had a kick charged down in their own 22, but good defensive work enabled them to clear the ball. Swans had a penalty to the 5 metre line, but the catch/drive was unsuccessful but after 9 minutes Swans were awarded another penalty, which fly half Stephen Woolley decided to go for goal, which he duly slotted.(3pts – nil) Swans were on top for the first twenty minutes, but then another penalty took them within 5 metres of the Blandford try line, and this time the catch/drive move ended with hooker Jack Daniels scoring his maiden try for Swans 1st XV.(8pts – 0pts). Swans continued to press and Blandford could not get out of their half, but Swans had to wait until the closing minute of the half, when after a series of phases the ball came out to flanker Matt Roberts who scored close to the posts. Steve Woolley added the extras as Swans went into the lead by 15pts-nil at the interval.
A series of errors in the beginning of the second half by both teams restricted progress on the scoring front, but after 55 minutes a Blandford breakaway by the backs enabled the visitors to score a try in the corner.(15pts – 5pts). Almost from the restart Swans attacked the Blandford line and full back Adam Smith running a superb line, cut through the visitors defence to score close to the posts. Woolley added the conversion (22pts – 5pts). Swans now had the visitors on the back foot, and after 67 minutes Swans found their way over for another try when Swans no.8 Joe Desmond found himself in the clear to go in for Swans bonus point try. Woolley added the extras 29pts – 5pts. With 5 minutes remaining another penalty took Swans within Blandford 5 metres line, and after a couple of phases Swans second row Kirk Jones powered over the line out wide for his second try of the season.(34pts – 5pts). The victory moves Swans three places up the league table on eight points with this bonus point win.
