Swanage & Wareham welcomed second in the league table Marlborough to Bestwall on Saturday. and in one of the best displays by the home side all season Swans managed to inflict only the third defeat of the season on the visitors.

The play was end to end in the first fifteen minutes, with both sides giving away penalties in succession. However from then on a series of penalties given away by the visitors had Swans in the Marlborough 22. After 23 minutes another penalty enabled Stephen Woolley to put Swans 3pts ahead. Swans’ defence kept the Marlborough backs in check and on the half hour mark, from a scrum on the halfway line the ball was passed along the Swans threequarters, out to winger Lee Hardy who outflanked his opposite number to score Swans first try of the afternoon.(8pts – nil).Marlborough came back at Swans towards the end of the first half, but solid defence by the home side prevented any further score before the interval.

It did not start well for Swans early in the second half, as from a scrum, Marlborough passed the ball along their backs to a winger who outpaced the Swans defence to score close to the posts after 43 minutes. The conversion was landed(8pts – 7pts). Swans lost Charlie Rowberry to a leg injury five minutes later, and a penalty to Marlborough put them into Swans 22, and after a scramble the visitors managed a try in the corner after 52 minutes(8pts – 12pts). Almost immediately afterwards, Swans advanced into Marlborough territory and after a few phases, scrum half Chris Tomes worked his way over the try line close to the posts. Steve Woolley added the extras.( 15pts – 12pts). Swans were now on top of the play, and most of the rest of the play was in the Marlborough half. After 62 minutes Swans were awarded a penalty which Woolley converted(18pts – 12pts), and once again Marlborough gave away another penalty after 68 minutes which Woolley landed(21pts – 12pts). A clearance kick by Swans took them into the visitors 22, Swans won the line out and drove towards the try line. Swans attempted several drives over the line, but it was up to flanker Connor McCaffrey to complete the score. Woolley added the extras after 74 minutes.(28pts – 12pts). Having scored three tries Swans were looking for the bonus point try, but had to settle for a four point victory.
