NORTH DORSET 30pts SWANAGE & WAREHAM 37pts.
In their penultimate game in Southern Counties league Swans had to travel to Gillingham, to play North Dorset at their Slaughtergate ground, hoping for a win to boost their chances of staving off relegation.
It did not look good as Swans gave away a penalty after 6 minutes which was converted to give the hosts a 3pts advantage. However, Swans responded and after a penalty to Swans which took them into the North Dorset 22, the ball was worked back to fly half Stephen Woolley, who scored in the corner after 12 minutes.(3pts – 5pts). From the restart, Swans powered their way into the North Dorset 22, and after a few phases fly half Stephen Woolley worked his way over the try line close to the posts. Woolley added the extras( 3pts – 12pts) after 15 minutes. 5 minutes later a move by North Dorset had their right winger scoring in the corner to bring the score closer at 10pts – 12pts. A couple of penalties were awarded to Swans to take them back into the home sides territory and a third was in range so Steve Woolley duly slotted the ball over.(10pts – 15pts) on 27 minutes. The play was even as they got closer to the interval, but a penalty to Swans took them into the North Dorset 22, and from a catch/drive move Swans powered their way over the try line, Chris Tomes claiming the score out wide. Half Time North Dorset 10pts Swans 20pts.
It was an even start to the second half, but from a scrum on the halfway line, the hosts moved the ball out to a winger who outpaced the Swans’ defence to score half way out.(17pts – 20pts) after 47 minutes. Swans had a drive close to the North Dorset try line, but this was held up and North Dorset cleared their lines. Swans gave away another penalty which the hosts converted.(20pts – 20pts) after 55 minutes. However Swans came back at the opposition and in a move down the left Swans’ other centre Adam Smith scored close to the posts. Woolley added the extras after 62 minutes(20pts – 27pts). Swans were now on top and from a catch/drive move the ball was worked back to Chris Tomes after 66 minutes, who scored his second try. Swans increased their lead to 20pts – 34pts after Woolley’s conversion. Another penalty from the boot of Steve Woolley took Swans score to 37pts after 75 minutes. Chris Tomes was led off with 3 minutes to go, and a cross kick by North Dorset’s fly half was caught in the corner by a winger who scored out wide.(25pts – 37pts). In the 80th minute a break by North Dorset centre enabled them to secure a losing bonus point as he put some semblance of respectability to the score as Swans were the better side on the day.
