Swanage & Wareham Rugby club travelled to Corsham for their latest Southern Counties (South) fixture, with a team that contained some up and coming players replacing some of Swans regulars.
Right from the start of the game, from a penalty to Swans, the resulting line out the ball was passed along Swans’ three-quarters, to winger Karl Barton who beat the opposition defence to score in the corner after only two minutes of play. Swans continued to attack and after 11 minutes an attempted kick clearance by Corsham, was charged down inside the Corsham 22 metes line, Swans second row forward Will Corsie was first to react, and he touched down out wide. The wind conditions made the conversions difficult so Swans led by 0pts – 10pts. Swans were pegged back by a couple of penalties to the hosts, but on 21 minutes the visitors were on top again. From a line out a typical Swans catch/drive move, had the pack driving over the Corsham line, with prop forward Zach Wyburgh claiming the try.(0pts – 15pts). Swans continued to press forward, and after 34 minutes from a scrum, Swans number eight Kirk Jones broke clear of the Corsham defence, moved the ball out to winger Charlie Rowberry who out -paced the opposition to touch down in the corner, for Swans bonus point score.(0pts – 20pts at half time).
The game continued, much like the first half with Swans having the upper hand, and after several phases in front of the Corsham posts, the ball eventually went to Swans no.8 Kirk Jones who forced his way over the try line after 45 minutes.(0pts – 25pts) . Eight minutes later, Swans won another penalty which was put into the corner, and from the line out another catch/drive move resulted in a try out wide to the visitors, this time the other second row, Dan Collins, came up with the ball. (0pts – 30pts). Just after the hour mark, Swans were on the scoreboard once again as Swans won a line out, and with a five man overlap the ball was worked to winger Charlie Rowberry who went in for his second try. This time veteran fly half Phil Graves took the place kick for Swans first conversion(0pts – 37pts). With ten minutes to play, once again from a scrum, the ball was worked all along Swans’ backs to Charlie Rowberry who was on hand to run in for his third try, making the score 0pts – 42pts). In injury time once again Swans were attacking the Corsham line, with no defence, when the Corsham hooker intercepted a loose Swans pass, and from 80 metres he outpaced the Swans backs to score a try half way out. The conversion was missed, giving Swans another five league points with the victory by 5pts – 42pts.
