23/01/2010 Swans 1st XV 39 Wallingford 13 Report for Swans Rugby

Swanage & Wareham completed the double over Wallingford, but not without a scare as the visitors briefly led twice before Swans capitalised mainly in the last 20 minutes, running in six tries to Wallingford’s one.

After just two minutes Wallingford took the lead with a penalty by Jackson Sayce, the league’s top kicker, but within five minutes from a catch/drive move inside the visitors 22 Swans had taken the lead as the captain, Robert Elford powered his way over the line. 5 – 3. Swans had much the better of the play for most of the rest of the half, and then went further ahead as No. 8 Daffyd Wright snaffled the ball from a line out to Wallingford after 25 minutes, and worked his way over the line for a converted try. Phil Graves adding the extras. 12 – 3 at half time.

In the first minute of the second half, a knock on by Swans enabled a kick ahead by a Wallingford boot in to an open space, and centre Richard Turner won the race for the ballot score half way out. Sayce added the conversion 12 – 10 to Swans. Five minutes later Swans were once again behind as Sayce added a penalty goal to give the visitors a 12 – 13 advantage. Fortunately, for Swans, this state of affairs did not last long as Phil Graves put Swans back in the lead with another penalty goal after 50 minutes. 15 – 13. From then on with Swans pack dominating the scrums and lines out, three minutes later prop forward Ollie Andrews barged his way over the line to extend Swans lead to 20- 13. The hosts extended their lead as scrum half Mike McKeown broke through the Wallingford defence to score under the posts, his debut try for Swans this season. 27 – 13. From a scrum the ball was passed all along the three-quarters line to winger Darren Wilcox who went in for a try in the corner 32 – 13. Finally in a great move the ball was worked twice along the backs before coming back along the line to Charlie Parish who slipped the ball to prop forward, granddad Alan Woodard who scored in the corner for his first try of the season. Phil Graves added the conversion with the last kick of the match.
