DORSET/ WILTS CUP FINAL
SWANAGE & WAREHAM 25pts TROWBRIDGE 20pts
Last Saturday Swanage & Wareham travelled to North Dorset’s ground in the final of the Dorset/ Wilts Cup against Trowbridge, and after a delayed start, because there was no ball available, at last the game got underway.
Swans started on the attack, but it was ten minutes before they got on the scoreboard. A clearance kick by Trowbridge found Swans full back Karl Barton, who passed outside to winger Callum Young, 50 metres out. Young outpaced the cover to score an individual try in the corner giving Swans a 5pts lead. An even series was played for the next ten minutes, but Trowbridge were caught offside, and Swans’ centre David Elford landed the penalty goal(8pts – 0 pts). Swans conceded a series of penalty kicks to Trowbridge, and from a catch/ drive move Trowbridge forced their way over Swans’ try line after 25 minutes.(8pts – 5pts). From the restart Swans moved forward and flanker Matt Roberts broke clear to score a try under the posts. David Elford added the extras taking Swans into a 15pts – 5pts advantage. Two minutes before the interval one of Swans’ players was yellow carded, and from the resulting penalty kick Trowbridge reduced the arrears to 15pts -8pts at the break.
Almost from the start of the second half, Trowbridge had a penalty which took the into Swans 5 metres line, and from a catch/drive Trowbridge scored a try in the corner.(15pts – 13 pts). Much of the play in this period was pretty even, but a penalty to Swans took them into the Trowbridge 22, after 65 minutes, and after a catch/drive move centre Phil Graves claimed the try, ably assisted by second row Dan Collins.(20pts – 13pts). Swans then took control of the game, and ten minutes later from another catch/drive move and a few phases later scrum half Chris Tomes worked his way over the try line.(25pts – 13pts). Well into injury time a Trowbridge penalty took them deep into Swans 22 and after several phases Trowbridge scored a consolation try, which was converted. Immediately after the conversion the referee called a halt to the proceedings giving
Swans the Cup with a 25pts – 20pts victory.
