Match Report

1st xv vs Bicester

Swanage & Wareham entertained Bicester in the Southwest Cup last Saturday. Bicester are currently second in Southern Counties(North), which is Swans sister league in Oxford, Buckingham, and Berkshire.
Swans started the half on the attack and should have had an early score but for a knock on close to the visitors line. However after 4 minutes Phil Graves put Swans ahead with a penalty goal. It was all Swans in the first fifteen minutes, but determined defence by Bicester and mistakes by Swans produced no further scores. A couple of penalties enabled Bicester to advance into Swans 22 and after 20 minutes Tom Miles centre for Bicester landed an equalising score to put the score at 3pts each. Swans were winning the forwards battle, pushing the Bicester back at the scrums, but the Bicester three-quarters were a constant threat, but there was no further score up until the end of the first half.
It was a different story from early in the second half, as from a scrum on the Bicester 22, Swans loose forward Matt Roberts broke clear to run in close to the posts. Phil Graves added the extras(10pts – 3pts).
After 46 minutes Swans put the ball into touch on the Bicester 5 metres line, and from the line out, after a couple of phases Erin Inglis, Swans other loose forward, was on hand to score his first try for the club. Phil Graves added the conversion(17pts – 3pts). Apart from giving away some penalties, it was all Swans in the second half and with a smart move down the right hand side of the field, Swans hooker Robert Elford rounded off a move to score in the corner. From the touchline Swans full back Steve Woolley landed the conversion.(24pts – 3pts) after 56 minutes. Swans made a few changes to the line up to give all the bench a go, but Swans continued the pressure. After 73 minutes, the referee signalled a penalty to Swans, but Swans fly half Jake Warren fancied a drop at goal, which succeeded, to advance Swans score to 27pts. In the dying minute Bicester produced a try of their own as centre Francois Weiese crossed the line. Tom Miles added the extras but Swans reached the next round. In the other half of the draw Thatcham beat Marlow, so Swans will have to travel to Thatcham on the 25th February.
