1st xv vs Thatcham- Final Southern Counties Cup

SWANAGE & WAREHAM RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB LTD.

SOUTHERN COUNTIES CUP
THATCHAM 18pts SWANAGE & WAREHAM 22pts

In the final of the Southern Counties Cup( otherwise known as the Intermediate Cup), Swanage & Wareham had to travel away to Berkshire club Thatcham who play in Southern Counties North.
On a windy day, with period of rain, Swans chose to face the elements in the first half, but were soon in trouble giving away a penalty on their own 22 after three minutes, which was put over the posts leaving Swans 3pts down. However Swans responded with a period of pressure on the Thatcham defence, and following a scrum, the ball was moved back into the forwards and Ilaita Ratuqalovi, who was playing as a flank forward powered his way over the try line in the corner.(3pts – 5 pts) after 12 minutes. From a long kick downwind the hosts outflanked the Swans defence, and after 15 minutes Thatcham scored close to the posts for a converted try. (10pts -5pts). Thatcham were using the wind advantage, keeping Swans on the back foot, and after 25 minutes, another penalty goal extended the hosts lead to 13pts – 5pts. Swans pressed up field using the forward’s advantage, and following a series of scrums inside the hosts 22, Swans no.8 Kirk Jones worked his way over the try line close to the posts. Phil Graves added the extras to peg Thatcham’s advantage to 13pts – 12pts after 36 minutes, which was the half time score.
Swans were more comfortable playing with the wind, and most of the second half was played inside the Thatcham half. However the hosts defended well, and with Swans making a few errors it was not until the 64th minute that Swans took the lead. Following a line out inside the 22 a catch/drive move with a few phases had Swans scrum half Chris Tomes working his way over the line out wide.(13pts – 17pts). Swans continued to press, and with 6 minutes to go Swans replacement flank forward Erin Inglis was on hand to score Swans fourth try.(13pts – 22pts). Swans then relaxed, gave away a penalty taking Thatcham into Swans 22, and the hosts managed a try in the last minute to take the score to 18pts – 22pts which was the final score.
The victory leads on to the next round, which is on the 18th March, with Swans having a home tie against Truro who defeated Chew Valley 7pts – 14pts in the Western Counties Final.
