SWANAGE & WAREHAM 15pts LEIGHTON BUZZARD 41pts
Swans welcomed Leighton Buzzard, a Bedfordshire team, to Bestwall, for the first ever meeting of the two clubs. Leighton Buzzard are laying in fourth place in league Southwest One, so Swans were expecting a hard fought game.
In the first minute Swans gave away a penalty, which Leighton Buzzard put into the corner, and from the resulting line out Buzzard scored a try by captain and centre Euan Irwin half way out. Leighton Buzzard continued to put Swans under pressure, and a three-quarters move after eight minutes, once again Euan Irwin went into score his second try. Full back Geoff Branwhite converted to give the visitors a 0pts – 12pts advantage. At last Swans were able to put some attacking play into the game, and after 15 minutes they got onto the scoreboard as Phil Graves slotted a penalty goal. However 5 minutes later a penalty took the visitors down to Swans’ 5 metres line from which a catch/ drive move enabled them to score a try in the corner.(3pts – 17pts). For the rest of the half the play was evenly contested, with Swans coming close to scoring, but they could not turn pressure into points. Half Time Swans 3pts Leighton Buzzard 17pts.
The second half started like the first, it that in the first move of the half Leighton Buzzard went wide as winger Ollie Taylor scored under the posts(3pts – 24pts). Swans then made lots of ground through their forwards, keeping the ball tight. A penalty after 50 minutes, put Swans into the visitors 22, and a catch/drive move forced Leighton Buzzard back as the hosts powered over the line with second row Will Corsie coming up with the ball. Phil Graves added the two points.(10pts – 24pts). From the restart once again Swans put pressure on the Leighton Buzzard defence, and after a multitude of phases, the ball came out to scrum half Chris Tomes who forced his way over the line. (15pts – 24pts). Just after the hour mark, a break by the visitors split the Swans defence, and led to Euan Irwin going in for his hat trick of tries this time under the posts.(15pts – 31pts). Swans were not finished yet, as they continued to press forward with the pack gaining much ground. With a fine move along the Swans’ backs in the opposition 22 Leighton Buzzard winger Ollie Taylor intercepted the move and sprinted from inside his own 22 to score out wide after 68 minutes.(15pts – 36pts).
