SWANAGE & WAREHAM RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB LTD.
OXFORD HAREQUINS 47pts SWANAGE & WAREHAM 5pts
Swanage & Wareham had to travel away to Oxford Harlequins with a depleted team due to injuries and several unavailabilities , but those who travelled put up a spirited display.
Swans were first on the attack, but after six minutes a break by one of the Oxford centres had the Quins going in for the first try. Swans went further behind as another three-quarters move had the hosts going 12pts – nil ahead after ten minutes. Swans came back into the game for the next twenty minutes until a penalty put Quins into Swans 5 metres line, and with a catch/drive move had Oxford going to 19pts ahead.
However in the next ten minutes the line speed of the Oxford backs tore holes in the visitors defence and
After an adjustment to the Swans line up, they started to look somewhat more organised in the second half although after 50 minutes Quins scored another converted try to take their score to 47pts. For the rest of the half Swans gave as good a display of play, although they had a few scares, but determined tackling kept the Quins at bay. With ten minutes to go, a penalty took Swans into the hosts 22 and with a series of pick and go drives took Swans close to the Quins try line. From one of these drives prop forwards Nick Audley and Garry Smith drove over the line with Gary Smith claiming the try which was his first for Swans 1st XV. (47pts – 5pts) Phil Graves’ conversion drifted wide.
