Match Report

1st xv vs Salisbury

SWANAGE & WAREHAM RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB LTD.

SWANAGE & WAREHAM 19pts SALISBURY 22pts.
Swanage & Wareham welcomed out old friends and local rivals, Salisbury who are second in the standings in Southwest One, to Bestwall last Saturday, and following Swans impressive performance at Grove in their last game, the home side worked well and managed to pick up a losing bonus point.
The game did not start well for Swans, as in the first minute a break down the right wing had Salisbury winger Dan Hammond crossing the try line for an early 5pts. In the first 5 minutes Swans gave away a series of penalties and it looked that the visitors would pile up the points. However Swans countered the pressure, cleared their lines and after 13 minutes a penalty took Swans into the Salisbury 22, a catch/drive enabled Swans’ second row Darren Penney to cross the try line out wide. Phil Graves added the conversion giving Swans a 7pts-5pts lead. From thereon Swans had much more of the play forcing Salisbury to defend, and Swans went further ahead after 25 minutes when scrum half Chris Tomes forced his way over the line from close in. Phil Graves added the extras to give Swans a 14pts – 5pts lead. In the last 15 minutes of the half Swans were under some pressure, but the defence was secure, and at the break Swans held a 9pts advantage.
The second half started with a series of penalties to both sides, so no side could make any impression , but after 52 minutes Salisbury centre Christrian Metson broke clear to score close to the posts(14pts – 12pts). Most of the play was evenly balanced, but on the hour mark from a penalty to the corner, a catch/drive move had Salisbury regaining the lead at 14pts- 17 pts. Salisbury had another breakaway try five minutes later following a huge clearance kick taking them to 22pts. Swans were not done yet, and following a penalty to the corner, with ten minutes to go, the ball came clear to Swans’ winger Pat Adkins who went in for a try in the corner.(19pts – 22pts). There was no further score so Swans had to be content with a losing bonus point.
