1st xv vs Reading
SWANAGE & WAREHAM RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB LTD.
READING 22pts SWANAGE & WAREHAM 19pts.
Swanage & Wareham travelled away to Reading in their latest Southwest One fixture, and after a promising start to the afternoon playing with the wind, they succumbed in the second half as the hosts scored with the last play of the game.
From the kick off Swans’ attacked the Reading line, and from a maul close to the try line hooker Robert Elford powered his way over the line to put Swans’ ahead after only a minute. Phil Graves added the extras to give Swans a 7pts advantage. Reading responded putting Swans under some pressure, but a penalty given away by the hosts enabled Swans to clear their lines. Although Swans had much more of the play in the first half with the wind in their favour, it took them another twenty five minutes before they added to the score. From a penalty Swans put the ball into the corner, and from the resultant line out a Swans’ catch/drive move had prop forward and captain John Sheldrake going in over the try line. (0pts – 12pts). Swans continued to pressurise the host line, but some poor play enabled the Reading defence to cope quite comfortably. However after 37 minutes from a scrum close to the Reading posts saw Swans scrum half Chris Tomes dummying the defence to squeeze his way over the try line. Phil Graves added the conversion putting Swans 19pts ahead. A couple of penalties against Swans put Reading into Swans 22, and following a scrum Reading forced Swans backwards to score a try in the corner. The try was converted with the last kick of the half leaving the half time score Reading 7pts Swans 19pts.
The second half started the other way round as Reading kicked the ball deep into Swans 22 resulting in a scrum to Reading and then a penalty. Reading put the ball into touch on the 5 metres line and with a catch/drive move of their own, powered over the line. ( 12pts – 19pts) after 42 minutes. As the playing conditions got steadily worse as the rain poured down, many mistakes were made by both sides and penalties were issued to both teams. However with ten minutes to go one of the Reading centres broke clear from in his own half, raced to the line and scored in the corner. The conversion was missed (17pts – 19pts).
Using the wind Reading virtually camped in the Swans 22 for much of the last few minutes, they tried catch/drive moves and scrums to power their way to a score, but as time was running out, the Reading scrum half kicked the ball across the field to a winger who was not marked and he caught the ball and scored in the corner giving Reading a try bonus point, leaving Swans deflated at only picking up a losing bonus point, with the final score Reading 22pts Swanage & Wareham 19pts.
