SWANAGE & WAREHAM 43pts FROME 10pts
In their first home game of the season in Southern Counties league, Swanage & Wareham welcomed Frome rugby club to Bestwall last weekend, and after an initial surprise Swans came out comfortable victors.
Swans attacked the Frome line early on, but after only three minutes a long clearance by the Frome flyhalf Joss Winduss caught Swans off-guard, and Frome winger William Delaittre – Smith raced through to run round to score under the posts. Winduss added the extras to put Frome seven points up. Swans immediately replied with a 5 metre scrum, went blind to winger Jason Chadwick who scored half way out. Phil Graves landed the conversion to level the scores after 8 minutes. In the act of scoring Chadwick pulled a ham string and was replaced by Jacob Warren. Swans continued on the offensive and after 23 minutes were awarded a penalty which resulted in a 5 metre catch /drive move with hooker Robert Elford powering over the line(12pts – 7pts). After half an hour a line out on the Frome 22 metres line, saw a switch ball move back to Elford who ran the 22 metres unopposed to score a try under the posts. Phil Graves added the extras to put Swans 19pts – 7pts ahead at the interval.
It did not take Swans long to increase their lead after the break, with a chip through the Frome defence with Swans winger Pat Adkins following up to score in the corner after 43 minutes (24pts – 7pts). Swans added another try after 50 minutes when after a series of phases close to the Frome line had Swans’ scrum half Chris Tomes working his way over the try line. Graves converted 31pts – 7pts. In the next ten minutes or so Frome came back into the game, forcing some mistakes by Swans, and getting penalties to push Swans on the defensive. Just before the hour mark from outside Swans 22 metres line Winduss produced a drop goal to put Frome into double figures on the scoreboard. As Frome tired in the last quarter, Swans forwards came into the action with after 68 minutes as Joe Desmond, Swans’ no.8 powered over the line from ten metres for a converted try (38pts – 10pts).With 4 minutes left, Swans took a quick tap penalty inside the Frome 22 and once again Joe Desmond crashed over the visitors try line out wide, making the final score 43pts – 10pts giving Swans 5 league points. Swans manager Tom Dillon said” I am pleased with the improved performance today, there are a few things we can work on in training, but it was a satisfying effort”
