Swanage and Wareham RFC welcomed Combe Down to Bestwall for the first time since 1995, and after a close first half, eventually Swans achieved a comfortable victory to take them to the top of Southern Counties league, above Marlborough on points difference.
Swans started well, with,, from a line out, second row Dan Collins powered over the line to put the hosts 5pts ahead. For most of the rest of the half play was even, with Swans winning the forward play but some poor handling in the backs preventing them adding to their score. However on thirty minutes, from a scrum close to the visitors’ line Swans other second row Joe Desmond forced his way over the try line. Phil Graves added the conversion. From the kick off a mistake by Swans had the ball going loose, and it was gathered by Combe Down to score a converted try making it 12pts – 7pts. Just before the interval a penalty to Swans took them to within 5 metres, and from the resulting line out, and after a few phases Joe Desmond was on hand to score out wide. Half Time Swans 17pts Combe Down 7pts.,
The visitors came out for the resumption of play attacking Swans line, but Swans defence was secure. Swans eventually cleared their lines, and a run through had Swans’ flanker Kirk Jones on hand to take the pass to score. Phil Graves added the extras 24pts-7pts after 52 minutes. Swans were pushing the visitors pack backwards, and from a scrum close to the Combe Down line, prop forward Zach Wyburgh scored Swans fifth try. Graves converted.31pts-7pts. On 65 minutes a break by the Combe Down full back,
split the Swans defence open, passed to his winger who ran round to score close to the posts, which was converted. 31pts – 14pts. With ten minutes to go a kick ahead by Steve Woolley was seized upon by Swans hooker Robert Elford who scored under the posts for Swans sixth try. 38pts – 14pts. Finally close to the final whistle once again Kirk Jones was on hand to score Swans final try, meaning all seven tries were scored by Swans’ forwards giving Swans the five league points by 45pts –14pts.
