In their latest league game in Southern Counties League, Swans had to travel away to Bath again to play Combe Down, who are struggling towards the foot of the table.
Swans started with an early penalty which took them into the hosts 22, and after 7 minutes, from a line out the ball was spread all Swans’ three – quarters to left winger Alex Parry who ran in from 25 metres to score in the corner. Combe Down then had a couple of penalties and came more into the game. However after 22 minutes a scrum on the Combe Down 22 had Swans right winger Callum Young going blind to score Swans second try half way out. Steve Woolley added the extras(0pts – 12pts). Swans were playing some excellent rugby and 5 minutes later following a scrum close to the Combe Down line, a few phases later Swans hooker Robert Elford crossed the line under the posts. Phil Graves added the conversion to put Swans 19pts ahead. With half an hour gone Combe Down were awarded a penalty on Swans 22, which the hosts’ fly half put over the posts. With 2 minutes to go in the half, Swans took a penalty to the Combe Down 5 metres line, and with a catch/drive move Swans flank forward Erin Inglis came up with the ball for Swans bonus point try. Steve Woolley converted to give Swans a 26pts – 3pts half time advantage.
The second half was a complete turnaround with Swans making a few simple errors and giving away some penalties. After 49 minutes Combe Down scored a try in the corner following a line out. The hosts continued with the pressure, and from a line out, after a penalty took them into Swans 5 metres line, a set piece move had them scoring in the corner(13pts – 26pts). Swans were giving away too many penalties, and on 65 minutes they paid dearly as Combe Down took advantage and scored a converted try under the posts.(20pts – 26pts).
