1st xv vs Devizes
SWANAGE & WAREHAM RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB LTD.
SWANAGE & WAREHAM 21pts DEVIZES 24pts.
Swanage & Wareham welcomed Devizes to Bestwall last Saturday, and in a closely contested encounter the visitors managed a victory in response to the defeat they suffered by 24 pts – 13pts earlier in the season.
From the start it looked like Swans were going to be up against it as within two minutes a mistake in Swans backs enabled Devizes to break through to score a try close to the posts. This was converted ( 0 pts – 7pts). However, straight from the kick off a scrum on the Devizes line had Swans scrum half Chris Tomes picking the ball up and going in for a try. Phil Graves converted making the score 7pts each after only 5 minutes. Both sides were giving away penalties, so for the next 15 minutes the play was evenly contested, but with 20 minutes gone a drive by Swans forwards put the visitors on the back foot and from a scrum close to the Devizes line once again Chris Tomes found his way over the try line out wide. Fly half Steve Woolley added the conversion (14pts – 7 pts). From this point on Swans were denied access to the ball, as Devizes forwards kept control of the ball, and Swans could not get their hands on the ball. With 30 minutes gone the visitors reduced the lead with a penalty goal, and after 36 minutes following a series of phases near the Swans line Devizes scored a converted try, taking them to a 14pts – 17pts half time lead.
After the break, Devizes held sway for the first ten minutes of the half, forcing Swans on the defensive and after 52 minutes they were rewarded with another try, which was converted.(14pts – 24pts). Swans came back into the game for most of the second half, but they could not dislodge the ball from the visitors forwards giving Devizes about 65% of the ball. However Swans made a few changes to the line up to try to secure some more ball, which they did and with ten minutes to go following a break inside, Swans replacement full back Adam Smith forced his way over the visitors try line. Phil Graves added the extras taking the score to 21pts – 24pts. In the last 5 minutes Swans did all they could to go for the win, but Devizes held out, such that Swans had to be content with a losing bonus point.
