Match Report

1st xv vs Marlborough

Swanage & Wareham welcomed Marlborough to Bestwall last Saturday, and it was a much changed side from when Swans visited them in December with eleven Fijians in their starting line- up with two more on the bench.
Swans started well with a penalty to the 5 metres line and with a catch /drive move after 7 minutes, flank forward Erin Inglis powered over the try line. Steve Woolley converted(7pts -0). It did not take long for Marlborough to reply, as the visitors back line ran in a converted try after 13 minutes. Straight from the restart once again the Marlborough three-quarters outflanked the Swans defence to score a try out wide(7pts – 12pts). This was the way developed with the Marlborough backs running riot, with Swans forwards dominating the scrums and line outs. Marlborough scored a third converted try after 25 minutes, with Swans adding a try from a catch/drive move as centre Adam Smith went over the line after half an hour. Woolley converted( 14pts – 19pts). Marlborough added a fourth converted try after 36 minutes, but in the last minute of the half, Swans winger colt Rory Furguson was on hand, following a scrum on the visitors’ line, to score a debut try for Swans.
Half time Swans 19pts Marlborough 26pts.
The try fest continued into the second half, with Marlborough taking a substantial lead with two tries in the first ten minutes of the half taking the score to 19pts – 38pts, before Swans replied with a try from replacement flank forward Sam Turner who went in for his first try for Swans.(24pts – 38pts). Swans were now in the ascendancy, pushing forwards and after 67 minutes Swans fly half Jake Warren crossed the try line. Woolley converted(31pts – 38pts). However Marlborough were not finished and two more tries by the three-quarters took the score to 31pts – 48pts with four minutes left to play. Another drive by Swans had once again Erin Inglis going in for his second try to bring Swans up to 36pts. In injury time Swans were pushing hard at the visitors defence, and after a couple of collapsed scrums the referee awarded a Penalty Try to Swans which Woolley converted to give the final score Swans 43pts Marlborough 48pts, giving Swans two losing bonus points.
