Debutants shine in loss for 1st xv

SWANAGE & WAREHAM RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB LTD.

SWINDON COLLEGE OLD BOYS 21pts SWANAGE & WAREHAM 8pts

Swanage & Wareham had to make the long trip up to Swindon for this, the first game that they had against Swindon College Old Boys. The Swans side had several youngsters who were making their 1st XV debuts for the club.
Swans started well, and put the hosts under severe pressure, such that they gave away a penalty in front of the posts. Stephen Woolley slotted the kick giving Swans a 3pts lead after only three minutes. Swans continued to put pressure on Swindon, but from a scrum the ball went to a Swindon winger, who broke clear, passed inside to his centre who scored a try under the posts. This was converted, giving the Old Boys the lead at 7pts – 3pts after 14 minutes. The play was fairly even at this stage, with Swans having the advantage in the scrums, but mistakes in the back line stopped them adding any points. A couple of penalties took Swindon down to within 5 metres of the Swans line, and from a line out and a maul Swindon forced their way over the Swans line. This was converted, 14pts – 3pts after 30 minutes. Swans came back in the last ten minutes, but a series of missed passes and knocks on prevented Swans adding to their score before the interval. Half Time 14pts – 3pts.
The whole of the second half was evenly contested, with not a lot of rugby being played due to both sides making mistakes with their handling and some ferocious tackling by both teams. Yet another mistake by Swans after 70 minutes led to another try by Swindon half way out , which was converted giving them a 21pts – 3pts lead. In the last ten minutes Swans put more pressure on the Swindon defence, and from a catch/drive move Swans piled over the Old Boys line with Swans no.8 Kirk Jones being credited with the try, after 73 minutes. 21pts – 8pts. In the last five minutes Swans were all over the Swindon defence inside the 22, and went close with a series of drives, but the Old Boys hung on leaving Swans pointless after two games. Final Score Swindon COB 21pts Swanage & Wareham 8pts.
