1st xv vs Walcot
SWANAGE & WAREHAM RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB.
WALCOT 27pts SWANAGE & WAREHAM 17pts
Swanage & Wareham had the long trek to Walcot, who play their games close to Bath racecourse. Swans suffered two casualties in the first quarter of an hour, which caused an imbalance in the team.
Swans started well, but after 4 minutes Swans winger Charlie Parish had to come off with a serious leg injury. Swans continued to pressurise the Walcot defence, but a break out by the hosts resulted in a scrum under Swans posts after 15 minutes, which was shipped out along the three-quarters for Walcot to score a try half way out.(5pts – 0pts). From the restart a collision resulted in Swans centre Finn Watkins receiving a head injury and had to leave the field. Walcot had a penalty which took them into Swans 22, from where a scrum enabled the hosts’ fly half dashing through for a try under the posts.(12pts-0pts). Walcot were on top for most of the rest of the first half, and from a scrum close to Swans’ posts, a Swans player infringed and the referee awarded Walcot a Penalty Try after 34 minutes. From the kick off Swans pressed the Walcot defence closely, but could not score so it was 19pts – 0pts at half time.
It was a different story early in the second half, a penalty to Swans for a high tackle saw Swans in the Walcot 22, and from the line out Swans flank forward Jesse Scott powered his way over the try line. Steve Woolley converted.(19pts – 7pts) after 44 minutes. Ten minutes later another penalty took Swans back into the Walcot 5 metres line, and from a catch/drive move Swans scrum half Chris Tomes scored Swans’ second try.(19pts – 12pts).However a couple of penalties took Walcot deep into Swans’ territory and a push over try increased Walcot’s advantage to 24pts – 12pts after 65 minutes. Another 3pts penalty took Walcot to 27 pts, but it was left for the best try of the game, as from a scrum the ball was passed all along Swans’ backs to winger Lee Hardy who scored in the corner five minutes from the end. In the last 5 minutes Swans tried their best to salvage a bonus point, but to no avail as Walcot won by 27pts – 17pts.
