Match Report

1st xv vs Marlborough

SWANAGE & WAREHAM RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB LTD.

MARLBOROUGH 39pts SWANAGE & WAREHAM 20pts

Swanage & Wareham had to travel away to Marlborough, who are third in the league table, so it was no easy game that was expected.
However from the start of the game, Swans were on the attack with a ruck on the hosts’ line, the ball was fed out to Swans winger Will Slack who dived over the line to give Swans a 5pts lead. This lead did not last long as after 11 minutes Marlborough replied as a centre ripped through the Swans defence to score in the corner. Swans were playing well but after 21 minutes one of the Fijians in the midfield kicked ahead and broke clear to score out wide.(10pts – 5pts). Swans had to look out for the Tongan and Fijians influence in the Marlborough team, who threatened every time the hosts had the ball. With 25 minutes gone another attack by Swans from a penalty, had centre Rory Ferguson scoring his debut try for Swans out wide.(10pts – 10pts). Once again Swans were undone 5 minutes later when a winger from Marlborough scored in the corner, and on 35 minutes Marlborough centre scored again, this time under the posts so the hosts led by (22pts – 10pts). From the restart Swans won a penalty, which captain for the day Matt Roberts took quickly, but was tackled close to the line, and from the resulting maul second row Adam Dicker went over for Swans third try, his first for Swans 1st XV. (22pts – 15pts) was the half time score.
From the start of the second half, a line out led to Marlborough throwing the ball out to a winger who ran round to score under the posts(29pts – 15pts). The play for the rest of the half was equally contested with Swans keeping the Marlborough three – quarters quiet, and producing some attacks by the forwards. On 63 minutes another Swans attack resulted in a penalty, which scrum half Stephen Woolley took, and dived over the try line for Swans bonus point try. (29pts – 20pts) . In the final ten minutes Marlborough scored two more tries to bring the final score to 39pts – 20pts and considering Swans under strength side, to pick up the tries bonus point was commendable.
