SWANS 12 - FROME 6
Swans winning run continues with a home win against Frome......
Swanage & Wareham rugby club continued their winning form, making it five wins in the last five matches, but it was as much a battle with the elements as much as a contest between the two teams. Swans welcomed Frome to Bestwall hoping to complete the double over their opponents whom they had beaten easily away, in October.
With gale force winds blowing across the pitch, the game was played amongst the forwards, and it was Swans who were giving away early penalties. After ten minutes, it was from one of these penalties that Frome’s fly half, Des Kruger kicked the visitors into the lead. Swans had much of the territorial advantage, but they were still giving away too many penalties at the breakdowns, to capitalise on this advantage. However after 25 minutes Swans managed a penalty to the corner flag, and from a typical catch/drive move, wing forward Daffyd Wright was powered over the line to give Swans a try out wide. (5pts – 3pts). Swans were pressing forwards for most of the rest of the half, but Frome’s defence was robust enough to stop any more score in the first half.
Early in the second half Swans fly half failed with a penalty attempt. Swans gave away another penalty after 45 minutes and the visitors landed the goal to give Frome the lead by a single point. From the restart, Swans won a scrum inside the Frome 22, and after a few phases by the forwards, the ball was moved to fly half Charlie Parish, who spotted a gap in the visitors defence and scored a try close to the posts. He added the extras himself to give Swans the lead at 12pts – 6 pts. after 50 minutes. Just after Swans’ score, a vicious hail storm caused the referee to take the players off the field for ten minutes, but on their return both sides could not improve on the score, giving Swans the victory, with Frome gaining a losing bonus point.
