WALCOT 12 SWANS 27
Swanage & Wareham rugby club had one of their stiffest test......
Swanage & Wareham rugby club had one of their stiffest test of the season as they had to go to Walcot, a side based in Bath. Before the match Walcot were third in the league so Swans knew they had a match on their hands.
However Swans started on the offensive, winning a couple of early scrums, and it was from one of these that Swans pushed the Walcot pack backwards, and Swans’no. 8 Joe Desmond crashed over the try line to give Swans a 5 pts lead after five minutes. Swans appeared to be surprised at the line speed of the Walcot three-quarters, and the hosts almost scored after ten minutes, but two minutes later Walcot levelled the scores with a well taken try by one of their centres. Swans continued to dominate in the forwards, but after 28 minutes Walcot took the lead with a converted try leaving the score at 12pts – 5pts. 5 minutes later Swans won a scrum in the middle of the park, worked the ball out to Charlie Rowberry who scored in the corner. The visitors were dominating up front and with two minutes to go to the interval fly half Charlie Parish worked his way over the try line to give Swans a half time lead by 12pts – 15pts.
Swans realised at half time that they could beat the hosts in the pack, and deliberately kept the ball away from the Walcot backs. Ten minutes into the half Swans passed the ball along the three-quarters to full back Callum Baird coming into the line, he beat two defenders, and scored half way out, to complete Swans bonus point try. Charlie Parish added the extras giving Swans a 12pts – 22pts advantage. Swans never looked like losing the game, as the Walcot players tired, and with ten minutes to go Swans debutant winger Todd Stevens made a break down the blind side, passed inside to hooker Jack Fielding who scored for his first try for Swans. 12pts – 27pts. This victory still leaves Swans top of the league with a perfect 45 league points from their nine games.
