Swanage & Wareham welcomed old friends and rivals to Bestwall on Saturday....

Swanage & Wareham welcomed old friends and rivals to Bestwall on Saturday, and it turned out to be a tough game as it would be, in a local derby.

Wimborne kicked off, and the first ten minutes were spent in Swans half, but Wimborne could not turn this early pressure into points, as Swans defence held firm. A penalty help Swans to clear their lines, to put the visitors under some pressure themselves. On 17 minutes a line out to the hosts saw Swans pass the ball all along the three-quarters to winger Charlie Rowberry, who went clear to score a try in the corner.(5pts – 0pts).Most of the first half was contested mid field, but after 28 minutes a high tackle by a Wimborne forward close to the visitor’s 22, had Swans fly half Charlie Parish landing the penalty. Wimborne came back at Swans, but as before Swans defended well and at the break Swans led by 8pts – nil.

It was similar in the second half, with no quarter being asked or given, but the after 48 minutes Wimborne’s second row Rob Best was yellow carded. Two minutes later James Mikolajewski had his one and only attempt at a penalty, but it went wide. Swans put more pressure on Wimborne, and on the hour Charlie Parish landed his second penalty to give Swans an eleven point advantage. Towards the end of the game Swans seemed to take control, and a penalty put Swans in to a 5metre line out. With a catch/drive move No.8 Joe Desmond came up with the ball after 65 minutes.(16pts – nil). With 8 minutes to go a similar move from a 5 metre line out had Swans piling over the visitor’s line, with hooker Chris Tomes claiming the try in the corner. In the last few minutes Swans tried hard to pick up the bonus score, but Wimborne held them off at 21pts – nil, so Wimborne did what no other side had done, denying Swans a try bonus point.

Swans team:- Baird, Spencer(Barton 38), Roberts, Graves, Rowberry, Parish, Smyth, Audley, Tomes, Wyburgh(Sheldrake 48), Pring(Murray 41), Penney, Corsie, Wright, Desmond.
