Swanage & Wareham travelled to Somerset last Saturday, for their first ever visit to Midsomer Norton’s ground. The game was played with a vicious cross wind which did not offer decent rugby.
However, Midsomer Norton were first on the attack, putting Swans under considerable pressure, but Swans eventually cleared their lines after ten minutes. From then on, the visitors put Norton on the defensive but they held out. On 25 minutes Swans were awarded a penalty within kicking range but Callum Baird’s attempt just missed. As Swans continued to press, a fly kick by the hosts down the field had Swans scrambling back to their own line, but nothing came of it. A penalty to Swans took them into the Midsomer Norton 22, and from a series of collapsed scrums the official decided Norton were guilty and awarded Swans a Penalty Try after 35 minutes. Callum Baird added the conversion (0pts – 7 pts). Right on half time Norton were given a penalty which the full back converted. 3 pts – 7 pts at the break.
In the second half Swans were dominating the scrums, forcing the home side backwards, and on 51 minutes had a try disallowed for being held up. A minute later from the 5metre scrum, Swans swarmed over the try line with captain Robert Elford coming up with the ball. Baird added the extras(3pts – 14pts) With 60 minutes a penalty took Midsomer Norton into Swans 22, but from a scrum the ball came out to Swans centre Matt Roberts, who fly- hacked the ball down to the half way line. He followed up by kicking the ball down to the home teams 22, with a final hack into the goal area, and he dived over to score the try, just before the dead ball line, in the corner. (3pts – 19 pts) In the final ten minutes Swans conceded a mass of penalties being forced to defend resolutely, but in the 80th minutes the home team scored a converted try out wide leaving the final score 10pts – 19 pts, keeping Swans on top of the table.
