Swans U11 triumph over Lytchett to continue unbeaten run.
A fiercely fought battle with local rivals in the rain.
The first wet and miserable morning of the season greeted the team for a fixture with our local rivals Lytchett. The rain and the suggestion that Lytchett wouldn't be able to field a full team may of put off a few and we were missing some key players. Despite this seven hardy members of the squad were excited to find Lytchett had arrived with 6 players and both coaches decided to run match on a reduced size pitch.
The first half was played in tricky conditions with the ball wet and slippery and the pitch heavy underfoot. Swans hit the ground running with a couple of quick tries through individual breaks and clinical finishing but Lytchett wouldn't lie down and continued to battle at the breakdown.
Turnovers were frequent as both teams struggled to retain possession and Lytchett hit back with a couple of tries of their own, again through some great breaks. Swans stood up to the challenge and fought back finishing the half four scores up.
The second half was much closer and Swans had a great start with Sam B picking the ball up behind his own try line and running it back the length of the pitch to score. Lytchett then stunned Swans with three unanswered scores. This lifted their morale and the last ten minutes were contested fiercely with both sides exchanging scores until the last two minutes where some key turnovers presented Swans with two further tries.
It was a great performance for a side that were missing some of our key players. Well done to all the players who put in
110% and stood together as a team in difficult conditions. It also must be noted that Lytchett put in a great performance for a side that struggles for numbers and it was a great team effort on there part.
The Crowd Favourite Award went to Oscar M who as ever was key at the breakdown and in defence making some great try saving tackles. He was also defastating in attack with 5 tries to his name. Oscar has a genuine natural born talent at turning over the ball and looks like a real pro when watching him at the breakdown. Many of the team tries were a result of his turnovers, well done Oscar.
The Coaches Player Award went to Harry who put in a great effort throughout the match. It is difficult at U11's rugby to find your place but we have been working with Harry to take up a scrum half role to give the team direction and this game proved another great step forward for his positional play and distribution. Great game Harry!
Other notable performances were from Jamie F who also scored five tries with some strong running and in his second game back after breaking his collarbone. Sam B also continued his run of scoring in every match by running in three.
Our next match is away to Sherborne which will provide us with a stern test but until then our unbeaten start continues.
